Building Confidence, Finding Voices: Your Guide to Broadway Maricopa's Summer Academy Workshops

What a season it has been for Broadway Maricopa! Between the massive community turnout for The Wizard of Oz auditions and the wonderful performances that just wrapped up our Academy Show Choir season, the talent in our town is absolutely undeniable.

But the magic doesn't pause just because school is out.

Since officially launching last year, the Broadway Maricopa Academy has become a year-round home for local youth. Our goal is about much more than just putting on a great show; it is about building the foundation of our local arts community and nurturing the next generation of performance artists. We want every child who walks through our doors to find their voice, discover their capabilities, and build unshakable confidence that carries over into every aspect of their lives.

This June, we are opening a special window into that experience with our Summer Academy Workshops. Whether your child is stepping onto a stage for the very first time or looking to sharpen their skills for the next big audition, there is a place for them here.

A Look Inside the Summer Workshops

Our summer curriculum is designed to feel like play, but the skills being developed are entirely real. Here is what the students will be diving into this summer:

Under the Sea Adventure (Ages 5-8)

Dates: June 1-5 | Time: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM | Location: Heritage Academy

Get ready for a summer week filled with creativity, laughter, and high-seas adventure! Young performers will dive into a world of imagination through improvisation, theater games, and "Big" character creation from the deep blue sea. The week culminates in a short showcase featuring musical numbers inspired by Broadway’s favorite underwater hits—from the reefs of The Little Mermaid to the adventurous depths of Finding Nemo.

K-Pop Krew Showdown (Ages 9-12)

Dates: June 1-5 | Time: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM | Location: Heritage Academy

Where the glitz of the idol world meets the high-stakes action of a supernatural adventure! Young performers aren't just training to be stars—they’re training to be protectors. Students will master precision choreography (doubling as "battle movements"), design their own props, and learn that their greatest weapon is their voice. The week concludes with an explosive showcase featuring favorite K-Pop melodies!

K-Pop Krew (Ages 5-8)

Dates: June 8-12 | Time: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM | Location: Heritage Academy

Bringing the high energy of our K-Pop Krew to our younger stars! This class breaks the ice immediately, teaching rhythm, coordination, and stage presence to the most infectious music out there in a supportive, confidence-building environment.

Heroes & Villains (Ages 9-12)

Dates: June 8-12 | Time: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM | Location: Heritage Academy

Are you ready to choose your side? Young performers will step into the most iconic roles in Broadway and film history. Students will train in character study, stage combat, and face off in theatrical "Improv Duels" to see whose legendary personality truly rules the stage. Good or evil—who will reign in the final dramatic musical showcase?

A Very Potter Experience (Ages 9-17)

Dates: June 15-19 | Time: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM | Location: Heritage Academy

Discover your magic! From the bravery of the "Chosen One" to the cunning shadows of the Dark Arts, this week explores the epic struggle between the light of a wand and the power of the dark. Performers will be "sorted" into their houses, craft magical artifacts like custom wands, and practice sharp, rhythmic wand-work for high-stakes improv duels!

The Hidden Takeaways

Parents often ask what their kids actually gain from a week at the Academy, and the answer goes far beyond learning a dance routine or memorizing lines. We have watched timid children step out of their comfort zones without fear of judgment, developing an unshakable confidence that carries into their classrooms and daily lives. Through targeted improv and acting games, students discover the power of creative problem-solving—learning to think on their feet, trust their instincts, and collaborate with their peers. Perhaps most importantly, they build a true theater family, making fast friends in a supportive ensemble before the next school year even begins.
