Every great story has to start somewhere. For Broadway Maricopa, that story officially began with a simple but ambitious vision: to bring a high-quality, immersive theatrical experience right to the heart of our city.

We believed that Maricopa was ready for its own spotlight. We believed that our friends, neighbors, and coworkers harbored incredible, untapped creative potential. And recently, during the maiden voyage of Murder Aboard the S.S. Jungle Queen, you proved us right.

The Power of Community Theater

Theater is more than just entertainment; it is the heartbeat of a thriving community. It is a shared space where we can gather, unplug, and collectively suspend our disbelief for a few hours. It’s where a local teacher can become a villain, a real estate agent can become a hero, and a quiet neighbor can command a room with impeccable comedic timing.

When we announced Murder Aboard the S.S. Jungle Queen—our very first production—we hoped for a warm reception. What we received was nothing short of overwhelming. All five production times were completely sold out. That response was a definitive, roaring message: Maricopa residents are hungry for the arts. You want local theater, you want to be entertained close to home, and you want to support your community. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

From the outdoor pre-show to the main stage, these ladies delivered incredible vocal performances that perfectly set the mood for our maiden voyage.

A Maiden Voyage to Remember

If you managed to secure a boarding pass for the S.S. Jungle Queen, you experienced a 1920s whodunit full of eccentric passengers, sharp dialogue, and hilarious unscripted audience interactions.

Those who embarked on this voyage began their adventure visiting the outdoor "Jungle Outpost." This vibrant pre-show market set the perfect tone for the evening, featuring unique pop-up shops from several incredible local Maricopa small businesses. As our cast’s talented singers performed live to establish the 1920s atmosphere, patrons were able to mingle, shop local, and soak in the energy of the production before the house doors even opened. It was a fantastic way to highlight our community partners while seamlessly pulling the audience into the story.

Once inside, feeling the energy of the room and watching the set in action, it was easy to forget that Broadway Maricopa is a brand-new company. That polish didn't come from us simply declaring ourselves a theater—it was a direct result of the immense wealth of experience, talent, and passion that our community members brought to the table. Under the masterful direction of Marcus Ellsworth, individuals from all walks of life united their unique skills to build something truly special from the ground up.

The Heartbeat of the Stage: Our Local Talent

A beautiful set and a clever script mean nothing without the people who bring them to life. The S.S. Jungle Queen featured a cast of over 40 local residents who poured their hearts into rehearsals after working their normal day jobs. The talent hiding in Maricopa is staggering.

These are your neighbors. Over the coming weeks and months, we’ll be using this blog to sit down with these amazing individuals. Through our upcoming "Center Stage" interview series, you’ll get to know the people behind the makeup, learning what inspires them, how they balance work and rehearsals, and what community theater means to them.

Cultivating the Next Generation

But community theater isn't just for the adults. One of our core missions at Broadway Maricopa is fostering a lifelong love of the arts in our children and youth. Through our upcoming Summer Youth Workshops (kicking off June 1st!), we are providing a vibrant, creative space for kids to build confidence, learn the value of teamwork, and discover their own unique voices. Whether they are stepping under the stage lights for the very first time or looking to sharpen their natural talents, these programs are an incredible opportunity for the youth of Maricopa to grow alongside this company.

Looking Ahead: Step Into the Spotlight

With the S.S. Jungle Queen cruise now at an end, our eyes are turned toward the horizon.

We are officially charting a course for an incredible upcoming season, including our highly anticipated production of The Wizard of Oz, slated for late August. And here is the best part: we want you to be in it.

Auditions for The Wizard of Oz are coming up fast on May 4th, 5th, 11th, and 12th. If you sat in the audience during our first show and felt that spark—that quiet thought of "I wonder if I could do that"—the answer is yes. Broadway Maricopa is a family, and our doors are open. Whether you have years of drama experience or you have never set foot on a stage, we want you to come out and audition. If the stage isn't your speed, we are always looking for passionate individuals to help backstage with set building, costuming, and technical support.
